Corsica 4th Grade

The Fourth Graders welcome you to Corsica.  We hope you enjoy your time here and discover something new about us.

Corsica's History

Corsica started because there was great interest in the land when the railroad came through. We got our name from the railroad workers who were from the Island of Corsica near France. Other names considered were Napoleon or Little Napoleon.  The railroad no longer runs through Corsica.
By 1907 the population was 500. Corsica had a water system, a fire department, and many businesses. In 1919, electricity came to Corsica. Lines were built from Armour to Corsica.
In October of 1907, the first fire in the recorded history of Corsica occurred. The livery stable burned to the ground. Fire was a problem in the early years. All the stores but one on the north side of Main Street burned in 1921.

The 1st school building went up in 1906 at a cost of $2,625.  In 1937 an addition was completed which included a gymnasium and an auditorium. Another addition was built on in 1968. It is the K-5 wing. In 1981 the new High School was built.

Businesses of Corsica

Corsica is a busy town with many different businesses and services. We have many businesses involving agriculture. The Feed Mill, the Cenex, and the Corsica Implement are some of the businesses that work with farmers.
The Cenex-Harvest States Feed Mill was started in 1994. It produced 100,000 ton of feed in the year 2000.  They will costumize feed for cattle and pigs. They hope to help farmers with increased corn usage. The Cenex helps the farmers with planting and harvesting. They also assist with ag-business development and fertilizing.

The John Deere Implement was started in Harrison and was moved to Corsica in 1905. It sells machinery, parts, bulk oil, and tires. It provides many services to farmers and repairs. It is one of the largest implements in the state.

Corsica Celebrations

In the past Corsica had many parades and celebrations! One part of the celebration was the Dutch Dance. Women and girls would dance in wooden shoes. They dressed up in Dutch clothes.  At the parades they had a wooden shoe float.  The community would pick a queen to ride on it. The Dutch Dance is still performed on special occasions.

Today we still have celebrations. One is the 4th of July  celebration. We have a Town Team game.  Before the game we have a delicious BBQ. During the game we have a candy scramble. When the game ends firemen set off fireworks. There are different kinds of fireworks. Some are colorful and some are very loud!

Places to See in Corsica

The Corsica Horse Sale is one of the largest in the U.S.A.  The Horse Sale sells over 7,000 horses a year.  There once was a horse that was sold for $25,100!  People come from all over the U.S.A. to buy and sell their horses.
Cleone Uecker is the President of the Horse Sale.  They are proud of the quality of horses that are sold and are also proud of the fine facilities.
Rolland Vander Pol ,the Antique Car Museum owner, has a lot of cars and some are very old.  He drives them in parades and he welcomes visitors to go through the many buildings of cars.
He has more then cars.  He has trucks, ambulances, and tractors, too.  The cars include everything from Model T's to convertibles.  He buys some but most have been rebuilt and restored by Mr. Vander Pol.

The Corsica Museum has all kinds of things from Corsica's past.  The Corsica Museum has collected artifacts of Corsica's past though private donations.  It is in the old Corsica Christian School building. It is open during the summer or by special arrangement.

The Veterans Memorial was made in 1996. It has names of the veterans who fought for our freedom.  It has 6 other stones for each branch of the military and a stone bench to sit and read the names.  It is a nice place for people to visit.  It is on  Highway 281.

Corsica's Many Activities

Seven miles east of Corsica is Corsica Lake. At Corsica Lake there are many activities to choose from. In the winter you can sled down the sloping hills or during the spring, summer, and fall you can camp, golf, fish, and boat there. This year is a GREAT year for sledding!
During the fall something BIG is going on in Corsica. HUNTING!! Every year people from different states such as Minnesota, Nebraska, and Iowa come to hunt deer and pheasants. During that time Corsica's residents show their hospitality by giving them a place to stay.
Some of the kid's favorite summer activities in Corsica are swimming and baseball. In Corsica's City Park the have a public swimming pool. It has a regular pool, baby pool, and a diving board. Near the park is the baseball diamond. Corsica has 5 baseball team levels. They are Junior Legion, Peewees, Midgets, Teeners, and Town Team. People of Corsica enjoy watching the games.

Corsica's 4th Graders find ways of having fun. You might think we would play in the snow or on the snow piles, but we do something very different. We play soccer! Yes, we play soccer in the snow even though sometimes we sink into it.
News: February 28, 2001

We thought you might like to catch up on the snow story.  This is the same pile as the one above after this weekend's snowfall.  The Corsica Globe reports that we had 11 inches.  We won't be able to use the basketball court for a long time.
