President
Wright called the meeting to order at 6:03 p.m. and a quorum was established.
Motion
by Tolsma seconded by Van Gorp to approve the agenda as presented. Motion
carried.
The
school board along with Arch Inc, Puetz, and Colliers presented to the patrons
the different options the board was considering for the future building
project. One option presented was to have “sister” projects which would include
a new K-4 in Stickney as well as a classroom and auxiliary gym addition to the
high school in Corsica. The other option would be to add on a full elementary
wing to the high school in Corsica and have all grades K-12 at the Corsica
campus. Many other options had been explored as well but these two options are
what came forward out of committee. The principals explained that both current
options have the 5th & 6th grade moving to Corsica in
which they would be considered middle school grades instead of elementary
grades. This transition would allow different educational opportunities to be
available for students starting as early as these grades versus waiting till 7th
grade. It would also further reduce staff travel during the day between sites
which essentially takes away from time with all students. Various concerns were
brought up during the meeting in regards to location, funding, enrollments,
sporting events, and how to keep the district unified moving forward.
There
being no further business, at 8:46 p.m., motion by Tolsma seconded by Plooster
to adjourn. Motion carried. The next
regular meeting date will be Monday, February 8, 2021 at 7:30 p.m. in Classroom
“A” of the Corsica-Stickney High School.
