On July 8, 2026,
we tested the school’s water to see if it contains lead, a heavy metal that can
cause health problems if ingested (swallowed). Lead was commonly used in
building construction into the 1980s. All schools in South Dakota will
eventually need to go through the same testing process we did.
Our water contained lead in some areas of the middle/high school. We have
identified a faucet in the kitchen that contains lead and requires
remediation(replacement). Because this fixture is in the kitchen, the
staff assigned to this room are instructed to run the water for 30 seconds
before use for drinking and cooking. A sign will be posted as a reminder.
This fixture will be replaced as soon as possible. Additionally, we discovered
fixtures in the FACS classroom also contain a smaller amount of lead.
Because the level of lead found in the classroom water was low, the EPA does not
require we replace these fixtures. Because these fixtures are in the classrooms,
however, the staff assigned to these rooms are instructed to run the water for
30 seconds before use that contacts food or is used for drinking. A sign will
be posted as a reminder. These fixtures will also be replaced as soon as
possible.
